After doing my own tests on this theory, I came to this conclusion- Matching the pitch of both the bell vibrations and the pitch of the air passing through the lead pipe and tuning slide did make a difference in how the instrument sounded and responded. The only problem with the thought that the instrument is more in tune with itself is that any change in the position of the tuning slide will have similar affects on your instrument. I found nothing note worthy in this experiment and would compare the basic sound and response of a Bb trumpet to…
This was a recent post on one of the more active trumpet bulletin boards and caught my inquisitive eye. After careful reading I decided to test the good Doctor’s theory. I will reserve my conclusions until our next post so that you will not be biased in any way when you do your own test. Carefully follow the instructions written by its originator and in our next post, I will give you my take of this new thought. Try it and see if it works. Testing A Possible New Way To Tune A Trumpet I would like TM to participate…
The Trumpet Ensemble of Paris was created in 1981 and I think you will agree that their playing and stage presence is well worth the time listening to. Their style of entertainment is similar to the Canadian Brass quintet; mixing fun and humor with outstanding musicianship. I have included two of their numbers and encourage you to check out their Facebook page where you can learn more about this fine ensemble. The Trumpet Ensemble of Paris
Now that we have addressed the fire as well as the band and band leader who perished in the Natchez Blaze on April 23, 1940, I would like to introduce you to a couple who have worked diligently to preserve the names and history behind the fire. Their names are Monroe and Betty Sago who are the owners and operators of the Rhythm Night Club Memorial Museum in Natchez. While making our way to the gulf to spend some time with our family, my wife and I decided to visit the city of Natchez of which we knew nothing about.…
Walter Barnes was an important figure in history for several reasons. • Mr. Barnes was a popular columnist, writing for the Chicago Defender, the national black news of the day. • Walter Barnes & His Royal Creolians became the first black band to broadcast in Chicago, over WHFC. • Barnes’s writings became the guide for traveling black bands in the South, opening a new frontier to the black band business. • Barnes’s greatness as an entertainer stemmed from his ability to exploit his audience’s desires. He became Duke Ellington to the smaller dance halls of the South. • Trapped in…

Each reserved time in the headlines and each was viewed as a tragic happening but some disasters go unnoticed by the general public for various reasons. When trumpet players think of the most famous trumpet solos, we most often mention Maynard Ferguson’s early recording of “MacArthur Park” (February, 1970). Others mention Bix Beiderbecke’s recording of Sweet Sue (1928) and still others will mention the wealth of great solos performed by the master of trumpet Raphael Mendez (b. March 26, 1906 – d. September 15, 1981). But everyone in the world will remember the solo recorded by David Mason, even though most have never heard of this gifted trumpet player. The trumpet solo on the Beetles recording, “Penny Lane” will arguably go down in history as the…
