Why you might ask is today the “Official Mouthpiece Cleaning Day”
It’s because I declared it and it happened to be the day I needed to clean my mouthpieces…….
So, be sure to do the following to insure that your mouthpiece is as clean as it should be.
It is possible to play with a dirty mouthpiece as demonstrated by one of my outstanding teachers-
When I got a call from Don Jacoby to sub for him on a gig in a local club I naturally said yes. When I got to the club, I had some extra time and because “Jake’s” horn was on the stand I thought it a good idea to take a look at it. After removing the mouthpiece, I held it up to the light and was amazed that not only was it dirty, but I could barely see light through it!
But, Jake could have sounded great playing on the rim of a Bud Light. Come to think of it, I think I remember that happening one evening.
If you want to get a good clean feel and a better sound out of your horn, I suggest the following-
- Soak in a Magnasonic Professional Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner with Digital Timer for Eyeglasses, Rings, Coins and TRUMPET MOUTH PIECES
- Scrub the inside of mouthpiece with toothpaste on a mouthpiece brush.
- Wipe dry on a towel to shine the outside.
The “Official Mouthpiece Cleaning Day” may be varied, but the need to perform on a clean mouthpiece is always recommended.
