Sleep apnea – What they don’t tell you! (Part 5)

#1 Complaint- Dry mouth

After visiting with other sufferers of Sleep Apnea, the most consistent complaint seemed to be dry mouth. The dryness in my mouth each morning was so severe that I eventually developed a lesion in the back of my throat which progressed into a serious problem. After several visits to an eyes, nose, throat specialist, I decided that the bleeding was caused from the excessive dryness brought on by the BiPap therapy. I mentioned that this was my decision because the specialist, after two exploratory excursions through my nose and throat, could not determine why I was coughing enough blood to almost require a transfusion. His suggested treatment included-

  1. Drink more water before going to be bed.
  2. Dissolve throat moisturizing tablets.
  3. Use breath mints before bed.
  4. Use Dry Mouth oral rinse.

So much for another expert.

Other suggestion offered by authorities on the subject of dry mouth included the following-

Use a Heated Humidifier

Find the Right CPAP Accessories

Try Hydrating Products

Stay Hydrated

Avoid Cigarettes and Alcohol

After trying all of these suggestions, the bleeding condition continued for several weeks and only by accident did I resolve this condition. Thanks to YouTube, the solution was made known to me. I happened on a video advertising a new product to alleviate dry throat when using Sleep Apnea machines. Although a product was advertised, I decided that the concept works and searched for the type of tape that would be best in my situation. I finally decided on this product which is available at most drug stores- CVS Health All Purpose Cloth Tape.

The solution to my dry mouth, bleeding throat and uncomfortable night sleep was solved simply by the use of this tape to close my mouth while using my Bipap machine.
