Great question!
If your name is out and you are considered a player, you have to be ready at any time. That means “anytime”. I once got a call to fill in for a trumpet player in Branson and I got the call one hour before the band was leaving town for the gig. That was the shortest lead time I have evr had. For shows, most of the time you know who will be playing about a month before rehearsal begin which give you a little lead time.
When I lived in Dallas, there were more subing jobs and you could be called a couple hours before the down beat.
That is one of the tough things about being a trumpet player, you never know when or even if you will be called.
Great question!
Practice every day and hope they call, or get into a more stable field like pharmacy.
